From flunkyball to Knalfeest: an unforgettable (and sunny!) lustrum

After a year of intensive preparations and many question marks (hi pandemic), the lustrum committee managed to organize a nice lustrum for KIC's fifteenth birthday. Committee member Britta Wienke takes you through the highlights per day.

The alarm clock went off at eight o'clock in the morning on Monday morning and the time had come: the week of the lustrum. I have to say, on Sunday evening I had a bit of a 'tomorrow is my birthday' feeling. After more than a year of preparation we kicked off the lustrum week with flunkyball. Unfortunately, you can't order good weather; what luck that we were able to enjoy summer temperatures and the sun all week. What better way to start the lustrum week?

Monday
With the COMPLEX sign under my arm on my bike, I arrived in Stadspark. Together with the luco and the board we started getting everything ready. Then the people started trickling into Stadspark. We were overwhelmed with people with big smiles on their faces. You could tell from everyone's faces that they were looking forward to it. Current active members were present, but also former KIC and even non-KIC! It was a great mix of people. People quickly gathered into their teams. All kinds of techniques were discussed; who goes for the ball, who goes for the bottle and there was even a last minute vortex adt workshop. It was noticeable that people wanted to win. Femke had the megaphone in her hand and after her start signal we were really loose and one beer after another was served. All rounds were played and it was time for the finals. It was between Hannah, Marije, Dyllan, Yannick and Berit and Marit, Sikko, Guus and Eva. Despite the fact that the second team had one less person, the others were just a bit better and received a Smooth Brothers Bon.

Monday was definitely not over, as the silent disco was on in the evening. At Nadeige's the headphones could be collected and in the evening you could get together on Discord to get the feeling that we were all together. On screen it was immediately clear who still had dance moves or who should practice again soon before he or she goes out again. The weather was still warm in the evening and headphones were even taken outside where people continued dancing or sang some (false) notes! The party continued into the late hours for some.

Tuesday
Day two of the lustrum has arrived. What better way to start this day than to provide our dear Kiccers with a brackish brunch. Even a camping set and a skottelbraai were conjured up from the garages to use for the brackish brunch. There was a whole buffet ready with a tray of Deli-yo, frankfurters, fruit, coffee and tea, orange juice and Flores as Chef Egg with a nice egg for everyone. We also had two birthday girls in our midst, Eva and Nadeige, and they received a real birthday donut with a candle in it while they were being sung to by all the broke faces. We also had a nice ginger shot for everyone. Well, some could handle that easier than others (eh Tom?). Fortunately, everyone also got hangover water and a paracetamol strip to overcome the brawn.

We had to hurry to clean up the broke brunch because after this the sign language workshop was scheduled. The workshop was held in the auditorium at van Doorenveste. Splinter provided us with a great afternoon. He had prepared words and phrases and we could imitate him in the corresponding gestures. Very special to see which gestures are linked to everyday words such as cinema, Groningen and coming together. From "there's nothing like Groningen" to "what time is breaktime?" we can now all express ourselves. This afternoon was organized together with the professional activities committee, Profi and Splinter thank you!

In the evening we stayed at the Hanze because a movie night was planned. In two halls the movie Soul was ready to play for everyone. Before or during the break you could buy a can of drink and/or a bag of popcorn with the proceeds going to the charity Eye Fund. Then all that was left was to sit back and watch the film. Just a nice quiet activity in between.

Wednesday
We are already halfway through the week and it was time for the surprise day! First everyone could sleep in a bit and then it was time for the handmade pub crawl. De Brouwerij, Chupitijs, Wevers Weavers and Ocean '62 were the pubs you could visit with your group. The Corner was also definitely present where you could score oven snacks. At each pub you also had the opportunity to play a fun game. From beer pong at the Brewery to suit in the tub at Ocean '62. In addition, at each pub you received some ingredients for the cocktail workshop in the evening.

In the evening the cocktail workshop took place. This workshop was given live by Jessy and Nadeige from the Stokerij. So earlier that day everyone had been able to gather their cocktail ingredients to make a mojito and a sex on the beach cocktail. There was also a moment when some prizes were announced from the lottery tickets that had been sold until then. Here are some happy winners.

Thursday
Before you knew it, it was already Thursday. The day we started with a fox hunt through the city. The so-called foxes were dressed up as the committees of KIC. For example, Martine sat in her pajamas on a bench near the Harmonie building to represent the almanac committee, Guus had put on his suspenders and held a stick as the alumni committee at the Vismarkt and Salwa got to be the winter sports committee for a day in a Tiroler dress at De Doos. At the fox where you arrived, you first had to guess which committee you were facing and then you got to do a task. The foxes were well hidden in their locations. At the end we met at the Noorderplantsoen. Here the assignment forms were handed in and the winners were announced: Charlotte, Loïs, Hannah and Nanouk!

Thursday night was for most people the last lustrum day. But how better to end the week with a great party! Together with Knalgeel we were able to organize a great livestream. On Wednesday and Thursday during the day the livestream team was already busy with the preparations. With more and more lights, a laser, the DJ table and all the decorations it became more and more of a whole. That night we had three DJs playing at the Knalfeest: Allert, Nils and Roban. One good hit after another was played and my Shazam has been working overtime to save all the new songs. Of course the confetti could not be missing at such a party and we have about 10 confetti cannons pop open. The last round of awards also took place. Together with Femke I was able to give away some really cool prizes like snorkels, disco lights, games and the main prize, the lustrum bike! The entire livestream can also be found on YouTube, so feel free to turn it on again to relive this beautiful evening!

Friday
The Friday activity in the afternoon was the last activity of the lustrum week. At Stadslab we were allowed to have another nice physical drink. All alumni members were reunited with each other. First KIC founders Peter Engelage and Martin Terpstra gave a talk. Then more speeches were made and countless adjesces were drawn. Everyone had a nice drink with each other, memories were made and even games were played with the lustrum playing cards and dice. Unfortunately, the vrijmibo could only last until 20:00, but we could still enjoy a small party afterwards.

It has been four weeks already, let's hope we can make it another great week in 5 years. On to the next lustrum!
